В этом новом (кажется) тесте на знание английских слов тебе показывают настоящие и фальшивые слова, и надо только нажимать 'да' или 'нет'. То есть он откровенно заточен на зрительную память, в отличие от тестов, где тебе показывают кучу реальных слов, и просят честно отметить те, значение которых знаешь. Полагаю, что люди с отличной зрительной памятью могут на нем получить оценку заметно выше, чем их реальное знание значений слов.

Просто сегодня случайно в неких титрах в списке использованной музыки увидел Вагнера "Полёт валькирий".
Удивило то, что там было не "Flight of Valkyries", а "Ride of Valkiryes" - т.е. буквально "Дорога (путь) валькирий".
Ну или - если попомнить пристрастия пропагандистов Третьего Рейха относительно озвучки этим произведением кинохроник о люфтваффе - "Налёт (рейд) валькирий".
Но уж никак не полёт, если подходить буквально.

Date: 2016-10-29 08:25 pm (UTC)В FAQ они пишут, что "The master list includes 60,469 words and 304,275 nonwords" -- вот уж вряд ли я знаю ~44000 слов. Хотя возможно они еще считают разные формы слова как разные слова. По другим тестам у меня получалось порядка 15 тысяч.
Действительно завышенные оценки получились, судя по приводимым ими значениям:
"...we estimate that a proficient native speaker will know some 40,000 words of the list (i.e., 67%). Older people know more words than younger people. The situation is different for second language speakers. Here, our estimates range from 6,000 words (10%) for a medium proficiency speaker to 20,000 words (33%) for a high-proficiency speaker."

Почему-то прошляпил expunger, abstention, sombrous, limekiln, хотя знал. Не знал: imperforated (сомневался), aspersorium, tactual, fantabulous, eelpout, karyotype (сомневался), fescue.

Вывод: тест очень грубо измеряет начитанность, а к реальному пониманию слов не имеет никакого отношения. Якобы несуществующее слово scawl на самом деле существует. Интересно, что исключив слова, в которых я сомневался и пропущенные по ошибке, в каждой попытке получим ровно 5 незнакомых мне слов.

Вопрос, конечно, спорный. У нас Бернса традиционно относили к английской литературе. Считать ли шекспировскoe "contumely" существующим английским словом? Несомненно. Однако...
Most people choose to be ignorant, and I am no exception. This is why, after 40 years of putting it off, I still haven't learned what "contumely" is. I first encountered "contumely" in a Shakespearean passage in which Hamlet, musing about life and death, complains of having to endure "the proud man's contumely." My response was not an immediate trip to the dictionary, which was 100 feet away and up a flight of stairs, but a surge of sympathy for Hamlet.
"There's no point in looking up 'contumely,' I told myself, because with my brain as packed as it is, I'll forget what it means within 30 minutes of looking it up."
This is what I have just told myself again when deciding once more not to look up 'contumely' in the dictionary. Obviously, we are dealing here with a common case of willful ignorance. I am not simply ignorant on the point, but determined to remain so.
